I had the opportunity to work with two other partners, Haven Henningsen and Anna Dresser, on a project in NYC. We were tasked with creating student housing for students who live in the depths of the busiest city within the United States. We were also asked to dig into as much of the city zoning and codes to learn how we can design according to laws.

When first thinking of how we can improve the students living situation, we wanted to eliminate the need to leave the building as much as possible. We understood that once students come back from a busy day of classes, the last thing they would like to do is leave for social interaction, food, exercise, etc. In other words, we wanted to make the student housing a one stop shop for their living necessities. We included different programming throughout the building such as a restaurant and market on the lower level that students can both shop, eat, and work at. The transition level above the market, is a large courtyard with tons of chairs, greenspace, and includes coverage for all seasons of weather. Each residential level has access to small kitchenette, study rooms, and community space for social interaction. The rooftop holds a large greenhouse that supplies the market and is an opportunity for students to work while going to school.
