Center for Cultural Coffee

The project was created from an open think tank studio I was in. I was given the task of studying Sol LeWitt’s ‘Two Open Modular Cubes’ (left). To freshen up my digital drawing skills, I created an isometric drawing of this art piece (right). This is what my inspiration was for the rest of the project.

Our studio shared the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Puerto Rico for our site. We were asked by our instructor to research the history and interesting artifacts of Puerto Rico. I found that coffee was a interesting as Puerto Rico has enjoyed a long association with high-quality coffee because the rich volcanic soil, altitude, and climate of Puerto Rico’s interior provide the perfect place to grow coffee plants. I chose to create a building to share, research, and explore the different species of coffee, native to Puerto Rico and around the world. I identified that lots of people over the globe enjoy coffee but are not very educated as to where or how their coffee originated.

You can see by the following, why the first drawing exercise was important leading into this project as we made several intricate drawings to compliment the project.
