*This is a pre-project that leads into the creation of the Center for Additive Manufacturing.
The project takes place within two sites of Des Moines, Iowa. Site one is a neighborhood which was a district previously effected by the redlining that occurred in Des Moines. This site is marked by the red pin in the North-East corner of the site map. The second site is next to the Des Moines Heritage Center, formerly known as the Des Moines East Village train depot. These two sites are both in correlation between the redlining and the history/heritage of Des Moines, Iowa.
The overarching goal is creating Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) to serve as formal architectural reparations to account for the redlining that effected both physically, financially, and culturally to the neighborhood and the people who live here. The Center for Additive Manufacturing will be on the second site and will facilitate the manufacturing, research, education, showcasing the ADUs.

The ideation process began with precedent studies of other 3d printed structures. I chose the Office of the Future – Killa Design. This project showcases a unique style for what 3d printers allow us to design and affectively achieve. The Office of the Future building is 2,691 square feet and was printed as a modular structure to be transported and assembled in under two days. This process cut costs by over 50% and reduced the timeline drastically.
Throughout my precedent study, I created drawings that would represent the ideas, processes, and functions that I wanted to utilize in my ADU design. I for sure wanted to keep this idea of modularity and it’s geometry, as this benefited the assembly process and the structural integrity of the architecture.
